Lysine and methionine are well recognized as the first two co-limiting amino acids (AA) for ruminants. Free amino acids are rapidly degraded by the bacteria in the rumen when the AA are fed to cattle. Rumen protected forms of methionine are commercially available. Despite decades of research, there are no commercial forms of rumen protected lysine (RPL) available. In today’s feed market, the typical standard for extra bypass lysine has been blood meal and fish meal.  The RPL project will result in the development and commercialization of a novel fermentation based product that will be the first commercially successful form of rumen protected lysine. The fermentation process will use novel intellectual property developed by Sage Biosciences and the initial production process being conducted in Alberta.  The product will allow for reduced feed costs, lower ammonia emissions from cows and increased feed efficiency for dairy farmers.
